Prana Prana is a Sanskrit word that has many profound meanings. The word is composed of two parts - pra = foreword or before, and ana = breath. What is before breath? Life is before breath and is the cause of breath. One synonym of prana in Sanskrit is Ayur. Prana and Ayur also mean soul (Jiva) and are responsible to hold the soul into the body. Nothing can exist before prana. [ Read more ] » All our books

Lyme disease

I have successfully treated a number of patients for Lyme disease over the last twenty years.

Lyme disease is transmitted by the Tick, an ectoparasite (external parasite). In Europe the bacteria Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are causes of Lyme disease. The tick needs to be in the body for 36 to 48 hours before the bacteria can spread and cause the disease. The best treatment is to remove the tick from the body. There is an old trick that hunters use in the USA to prevent infection that I learned as a child. Take a match and light it - bring it next to the skin where the tick has gone in - hold the match as close as possible, lightly burning the skin - the tick will ’back up’ and exit the skin due to the heat - burn the tick with the flame - then put out the match and rub the charcoal match on the open wound. It should burn the skin a little. This will prevent the Lyme disease if done in the first 36 hours. The heat kills the bacteria and the tick will not leave any body part behind if it backs out by itself due to the heat. If you try to pull the tick out it will leave legs or other body parts that will still infect you.

There are two herbs that work specifically on this disorder and can cure the disease completely if they are taken for 6 to 12 months - depending on how long the patient has been infected by the bacteria. If the patient has been infected more than 4 or 5 years it generally takes two years of treatment to cure them and remove the bacteria completely. It is possible to cure this disorder but the patient needs patients with herbs.

The two herbs I use are Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Lapacho (Tabebuia impetiginosa), both are in my textbook "Dravyaguna for Westerners". Lapacho can be hard to get, a decoction is the most effective way to take it; other preparations do not give very good results. Both herbs support the immune system and to help the body fight the bacteria and kill it off.

Another useful herb in tincture form is Golden Seal (Hydrastis canadensis) which is also in my textbook. This is hard to get in Europe, common in the USA.

Two other tinctures that are antibacterial herbs and have been used in the USA to treat Lyme disease are - Dipsacus fullonum, Linn., (syn. Dipsacus sylvestris) and Cryptolepis sanguinolenta, Lindl.

The dose of these herbs needs to be adjusted to sex, age, agni and all of the normal indications, see lesson Four in "Dravyaguna for Westerners".

An anti-ama diet can be useful at the beginning of the treatment for 2 to 4 weeks. After that the diet should be seasonal and follow the Prakriti of the patient. Extreme diets and cleansing therapies that reduce Bala (force) and immunity should be avoided.
